A Summary of the (terrible) Events of yesterday

What happened:

Yesterday, congress and the vice president gathered together to acknowledge the results of the electoral college in this election. Right after Republican Senator Ted Cruz spoke to congress, a large group of largely Trump supporters stormed into the capitol to intercept the confirmation of president-elect Joe Biden by congress and the vice president. The congresspeople were evacuated from the building by Secret Service and Capitol Security.

That’s a simple explanation of what happened at the capitol yesterday. But if I incorporated every little detail about the events of yesterday, this article would be endless.

The response from politicians:

Many citizens are proud of the vice president’s leadership during this riot. During the riot, he stayed at the capitol building, most likely in an emergency bunker. The issue was brought before the president but he did not immediately send in the national guard. Vice President Mike Pence, in the face of the president’s ignorance, called in the national guard himself. People aren’t only proud of his action regarding the riot, Donald Trump also pressured him to declare himself (because he is the one who declares the results of the electoral college at the end of the gathering) that Trump was the winner of the election and that more investigation was to be done on possible election fraud in this election. But Pence said that this wasn’t his obligation as a vice president and doing that would be against the constitution.

One of the relieving things was that the rioters did not succeed in stopping the meeting. After the situation was cleared up, they went back to the capital and resumed the meeting. When the meeting resumed, not one of the senators didn’t speak of the riot. After the riot, members of Congress have called for the 25th amendment to be invoked. This would have to have half of Trump’s cabinet and the vice president to confirm removing Trump from office. Some house members have also called for impeachment like was done exactly one year ago.

Every single living former president has made a speech about this riot.

Because of this riot, many Americans are seriously concerned about president-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration and whether or not rioters will attack it. Biden has told reporters that he was not concerned about his inauguration, however. There has been talk of canceling it and having it virtually, something that has never been done before. There has been a lot of the “never have been done before’s”: The US capital hasn’t been invaded since 1812.

The Tech Side of things*: On the tech front, Donald Trump has been temporarily banned from Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, and many tech platforms have blocked Trump’s video statement in which he was speaking to the protesters. What concerned many was that Trump called the protesters “special.” Surprising to many was YouTube’s take-down of Trump’s video. Through the dozens of tweets that have been censored by Twitter, YouTube hasn’t done much censorship/blocking type things during this season of uncertainty and rumors. But YouTube, along with other social media blocked Donald Trump’s account.

A Closing Note:

The (current) secretary of transportation has resigned and more members of Trump's cabinet are expected to either resign or sign-on to the 25th amendment use for kicking Trump out of office. This is what to watch for the next several days.

*this week's big tech weekly will talk more about this
