The horrible impacts that the coronavirus has on companies
One of the most heartbreaking impacts of Coronavirus is its impact on small businesses. Restaurant owner Tom Boucher said, “As soon as we got word from the governor that we had to shut down – without customers, we can’t afford to pay employees. My heart is breaking right now for our employees and employees across the country in the hospitality industry.” Think about it, mayor Steve Adler recently created a law saying that all restaurants and bars are now only allowed to do takeout! There are 55,000 restaurants in Texas and if they all went out of business, 14,000,000 people would lose their jobs. In 2019, jobs at a restaurant or bar were equal to 10% of employment in the state. Imagine, 10% of the second-biggest state in the U.S losing their jobs. More than 170,000 people so far have lost their jobs because of this coronavirus. Have you ever enjoyed a pizza at homeslice pizza? That is one of the many places that are greatly struggling. However, Austin isn’t the only city whose companies are struggling, New York City decided to shut down all movie theatres, all concert venues, and nightclubs. Whatever the impacts, the debate on whether these laws are helping or making things worse continues.
For our next briefing, Tej and Ellie will be writing about the medical services involved in the coronavirus.
